Kahne leads Dodge sweep in Las Vegas

03/10/2007 - Las Vegas, NV (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kasey Kahne's Dodge edged David Stremme's Dodge and captured the pole for Sunday's UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The No.9 Evernham Racing Dodge driver circled the newly redesigned 1.5-mile speedway in a record 29.212 seconds (184.856 m.p.h.).

The pole victory was Kahne's first of the year and 13th of his Nextel Cup career.

"These guys did a great job on this Dodge Dealers UAW-Dodge Charger and we're excited for Sunday," said Kahne.

In 2006, Kahne started six races from the pole and won three of them.

Stremme posted a second-best time of 29.317 seconds.

Elliott Sadler (29.368) and Juan Montoya (29.478), both using Dodge power, will make up row two. In fact, seven of the top-10 starters are Dodges.

The original setup at LVMS was a 1.5-mile "flat" oval with banking at just 12- degrees in all four corners. A multimillion-dollar renovation project began following last year's UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 which made a more fan-friendly garage area, relocated pit road closer to the fans, added a state-of-the-art media center and most importantly added banking to the superspeedway.

The speedway's turns will change from 12-degree banking to 20 degrees to allow for better side-by-side racing and higher speeds. The corner banking is similar to the banking at Homestead-Miami (18-20 degrees) while the tri-oval and back straight are banked at nine degrees which is similar to Dover.

The old Nextel Cup qualifying record at LVMS was currently 174.904 m.p.h., set by Kahne in 2004. Fifty drivers surpassed that mark.

Other notables: Jeff Burton (5th), Kurt Busch (10th), Kyle Busch (12th), Mark Martin (14th), Kevin Harvick (20th), Jimmie Johnson (23rd), Tony Stewart (25th), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (28th), Jeff Gordon (36th) and Matt Kenseth (37th).

"This is going to be a huge challenge for all the teams," said Burton. "The tires are exceptionally hard which by the way is the only thing to do with a new racetrack that will eat up normal tires."

The race is set to drop the green flag on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. (et).
