03/12/2007 - San Diego, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Legendary football star Ernie Ladd passed away from cancer over the weekend. He was 68.
Ladd, a defensive lineman with the San Diego Chargers, Houston Oilers and Kansas City Chiefs, was selected 15th in the 1961 American Football League draft by the Chargers out of Grambling College.
He went on play in three of the league's championship games, winning the 1963 title with San Diego.
Despite his success on the gridiron, Ladd may have been known more for what he did off the field. He led many battles for the equal rights of African- American football players and retired at the height of his playing career to become a professional wrestler.
Ladd was recruited into pro wrestling in the early '60s and remained as a headliner through the mid-80s, often feuding with another legendary figure, Andre "the Giant" Roussimoff.
He was inducted into both the American Football League Hall of Fame and the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame.
