03/12/2007 - Kansas City, MO(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Kansas City Chiefs signed unrestricted free agent linebacker Donnie Edwards to a three-year deal on Monday. Per team policy, financial terms were not disclosed.
Edwards started all 16 games for San Diego a year ago, recording a career-high 170 tackles with 2 1/2 sacks, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
The 11-year veteran originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick of Kansas City in the 1996 NFL Draft. Edwards played in 94 regular season games with 80 starts in six seasons with the Chiefs before leaving as an unrestricted free agent.
He led the Chiefs in tackles during his last four seasons with the team and ranks fifth on Kansas City's career tackle list, recording 742 tackles and 15 sacks.
"We are pleased that Donnie will have an opportunity to return to Kansas City," Chiefs president Carl Peterson said. "He was certainly a productive player for us and continued to play at a high level in San Diego. I know he is very excited to finish his career where it began, as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs."
In 174 career games (160 starts) -- including a string of 137 consecutive starts -- Edwards has tallied 1,508 tackles, 22 sacks, 27 interceptions, 17 forced fumbles and 10 fumble recoveries. His 27 career interceptions are the most of any active NFL linebacker.
